There’s a bountiful selection of dog treats on the supermarket shelves these days, but how can you be sure they’re healthy and nutritious for your dog, and that they’ll enjoy them? We think making your own is a great option and will show your dog you really care! Not only that, they’re cheap and easy to make, and you can tailor them to your dog’s personal tastes.
Dog Biscuits
How To Bake Healthy Homemade Dog Biscuits
This recipe can be adapted to make sweet and savoury biscuits.
Ingredients
- 250g plain flour
- 100g porridge oats
- 1tsp baking powder
- 2tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil
- 2 medium eggs
For savoury biscuits:
- 50g grated cheddar cheese
- 50g bacon bits
For sweet biscuits add:
- 2tblsp of runny honey
- 2 tbsp organic, no added sugar peanut butter
Method:
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) Gas 4
- Grease and line a baking tray
- Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl and make a well in the middle
- Add the wet ingredients (egg, oil and honey if using) into the well
- Mix all together to form a fairly stiff ball of dough
- Roll the dough out on a flat, floured surface to 1cm thick
- Using a bone shaped cutter, or a knife, cut the dog biscuits from the dough
- Place onto your baking tray and bake on the middle shelf for 20 minutes until light golden brown
- Turn your oven off, and let the biscuits cool down and dry out in the oven
- Serve to your pooches and watch them go mad for your homemade biscuits!
- Store in an air-tight tin for up to 2 weeks (if they last that long!)
Troubleshooting & dietary requirements
If your dough is too dry and crumbly, add a little water until smooth and pliable.
If your dough is too wet, add more flour or oats.
If your dog has a wheat allergy, replace the flour with potato, garbanzo or amaranth flour
